Breast Cancer Survivors Rally Around “Breast Cancer Pirates” Peer Support Group Formed by Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie – Arrrrrgh!

Englewood, CO – March 20, 2010 – The founder of Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie, Alicia Vargo, has been an active businesswoman in Colorado’s breast cancer community for nearly a decade. A few months ago she visited the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center and noticed a woman in the entryway waiting for her chemo treatment, dressed like a Pirate.

Vargo was curious and inquired about the costume. She learned that Tana(No last name due to HIPA is OK), from Parker,CO, was waiting to “steal her life back” as she patiently waited for her next chemo treatment. Yes, Tanna always wore her pirate costume during chemo to make a statement – and boy did she!

Tanna and Vargo got talking and came up with the idea to help other breast cancer patients and survivors steal their lives back too. Vargo rallied support in Colorado’s breast cancer community to start a peer-to-peer support group where she pairs a breast cancer survivor with a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient. The two women could then share stories and support each other in a rare one-on-one setting.

“I was surprised to learn that there weren’t any peer-to-peer breast cancer support groups in Colorado – that’s why I decided to start one,” says Vargo. “I believe that Breast Cancer Pirates will help these amazingly strong women find support, encouragement and empathy as they face a challenging time in their lives. We want to arm them with the support they’ll need to steal their lives back.”

Vargo says she is currently accepting breast cancer survivor Sponsers to match and assist with the women being referred to her from various hospitals and clinics across the state. She matches peers based on their diagnosis so they can share positive stories of survival and courage. She also says she will host monthly parties and events at her Park Meadows store, and other venues and will provide a directory of referral services to assist with special needs and requests.

“We don’t want a support group of women sitting around a table sharing their aches and pains like some kind of AA meeting. Rather we want them to get one-on-one attention from a newfound friend, and we definitely want them to come to parties to celebrate their beautiful lives!” adds Vargo.

Tana says she is honored to be the inspiration behind the Breast Cancer Pirate program. “It is so important for women in the Denver metro area to find a constant cheerleader in their lives – and no one can cheer you on as you walk the plank than your own personal pirate.”
