I was compelled to write this blog with with the Holidays here with a vengeance. We hear so much about breast cancer and its survivors, but to work with these amazing clients day in and day out puts a different “spin” on your own perspective.

I am a Certified Mastectomy Fitter at Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie in Englewood, Colorado and have been working with breast cancer survivors for over eight years.

One day, I wasn’t feeling particularly “happy” with my own universe and had to work that day. My first three appointments were very profound and would change my life and perspective about my own personal troubles.

My first appointment was a woman who was thirty years old, pregnant, and with a three-year-old in tow. She was having a double mastectomy the following Monday and was being fitted for a Post Op Camisole. She was an amazing mother, and her courage overwhelmed me. Her spirit was such that she treated her ailment as a mere “inconvenience.” Life was going on and she planned to live it.

My second appointment was a sixty-five-year-old woman, financially destitute as she had a double mastectomy, many complications, and no insurance. Her life as we know it, the quality of anyway, is completely compromised from here on out and her life would never be the same. She said throughout the meeting with me that her life is what she makes of it, and she was going to make a difference however she might be able to for other survivors.

Lastly, a fourteen-year-old girl who had a breast removed and needed to be balanced out under her clothes. I see this wonderful, magical little girl every six months. She is amazing. She chides about only having one breast at her age. She has a confidence beyond my understanding. Wisdom beyond her years about her body and the “perception” of other people, especially in the girls’ locker rooms.

So needless to say, I was the one having a bad day, or so I thought. My issues after seeing the three clients who had appointments with me were so small. I call them “Paper Tigers.” Paper Tigers are ferocious and mean and eat you, but they are paper, invisible, and not really intimidating at all.

So the next time you go about your day and are upset with the “Paper Tigers” in your life, think twice if the issue is a real issue or just a Paper Tiger!

Almost a “neoprene” like texture, surprisingly comfy, a wonderful line!

Yes, ladies, when you don’t want your headlights to show here are a few options:

Pasties Flowers that can go over your nipples. Contours that go over your entire breast. NuBra, produced by a Mastectomy company, not the knock off, so it really sticks up to 80 wears. This gem comes in a silicone version, perfect to add a cup size to any bra A/B/C cup size recommended. Aprodite, which is a cloth versions that comes in AA-B cup. The Aphrodite has a bump pad so it gives the breasts a bump “A little something, something” is what we call it. The Featherlite, which is cloth as well A-D no bump pad just thin material. Nubra is not recommended for lift, just coverage and a bit of cleavage. Nubra comes with a clip to enhance the cleavage. Completely backless, perfect for low back dresses, wedding gowns, halter tops anything you might need coverage for. Lastly the Seamless Nubras are paper-thin coverage with no seams showing. The Nubra comes with a cleanser for about $10.00 which assists in the lifespan of the adhesive. You should never put any oils, perfumes, powder or lotions on your chest before you stick these on or it will wear down the adhesive. Many of the women that work with me still use their Nubras for enhancers in their bras when the adhesive no longer sticks!

Very Low Back/Strapless Dress

Many Bridal Gowns and Cocktail Dresses have this claim to fame. DD+ ladies are especially challenged with this dilemma. Many bustiers are low enough in the back to wear under this type of a scenario. Bustiers from Felina, LeMystere, and VaBien are some of the finest examples for lift and support. You can also be fitted with a bra that can be lowered in the back and ties around the front, this is called a “convertible bra”. A strapless bra or camisole can be a perfect if the dress is at “bra level”.

Halter bras can be a wonderful answer to just that extra bit of support as your straps can tie behind your neck for additional support. Many of the bras that have arrived on the market this year can be worn multiple ways. Your basic way, strapless, T-Back, or Halter. This is a must have for any ladies wardrobe!
